People always talk about how it takes 21 days to break a habit...well I'm almost there. I am at day 19 of being facebook free...well 99% free. I did have to send a few people a message (which I did from Brent's account, and most of our friends don't even overlap so I wasn't at a real risk for a bout of discontentment), and once I had him get on my account and go to someone's page so I could send a message.
How do I feel? I feel pretty good. Am I more productive? Probably not. Now I've gotten into this blogging thing. Though I will at least say blogging and reading blogs gives you more than snippets into the lives of your friends. I feel like people are a little more real and it's not just this rosy picture status update. Plus you can choose to go to a blog. The news feed is just right there whenever you sign on. What's the point of facebook if I have to "hide" everyone?
So I've managed to at least prove to myself that I can live without facebook. I've been a little scared at times that I've missed something, but anyone who doesn't feel the need to tell me something personally is obviously not that close of a friend. That's not a bad thing. You can't have 400 best friends. It may even help me narrow down my own "mass news" e mail list. Maybe some people are not as interested in my life as I would like to think.
I'm going to have to get on facebook at some point. Ever since my own wedding I promised myself I would post pictures of other weddings as soon as possible on facebook. This scratches the itch of people who weren't able to make a long journey, scratches the itch of the uninvited, and it gives the bride a first look at some photos. I have some fun wedding festivities in the near future so I'll just have to do it!
I have no idea how my interaction with facebook is going to look for the long haul. I think my goal is to be able to go several days without even checking it. I think if I can make it about a month with virtually no facebook activity this should be possible. Notice I didn't say 21 days. I think 21 is a little too easy! Plus I was in Mexico for a week of the last 19 days, and it wasn't very hard to be off facebook while in a lounge chair on the beach.
