Political ad from Canada-it definitely exemplifies a low in attack ads.
I am so thankful for DVR! Why? Because I can fast forward through all the political ads. I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but for some reason I have actually felt completely offended by several political ads, and I believe many of you should be as well! I'm not getting candidate specific, because it's not about the politics in general...I worked in politics for a year and I feel confident telling you most of the candidates stink in one way or another. So I'm going to tell you about three kinds of people who should be offended:
1. People from rural areas: If you don't live in one of the thriving metropolitan areas of Missouri, you likely live in a place that could be considered rural. Do all people in rural areas have flowered country wall paper? Are you all feeling hurt by your current representative? Are you all sweet little old ladies who don't know nothing about nothing? I'll just say if I'm from a rural area, you just made me feel like you think I'm stupid! There are a lot of people who live in rural areas in Missouri. Missouri is a state that could go either way, why the heck would you stereotype so many constituents?
2. People from the metropolitan areas: If you happen to be wealthy, are you totally obnoxious and condescending? Do you have that wealthy voice tone you only see on TV? If you like to wear pearls does that make you any less worth representing? People who have money give a lot of it away. People with money also give to your campaigns. If you want people with money to give it to you, don't stereotype and alienate them!
3. People from Ladue: First off, I'm so sick and tired of people in general not from Ladue making obnoxious Ladue comments, but that's another blog post! I'm actually getting specific on this ad- "lawyer from Ladue" stated in an ad like it's supposed to be a negative trait! First off, person making ad, do you not realize there are over 8000 people who live there? Do you realize you just made living there sound like you are a person who shouldn't be taken seriously? Do you want 8000 votes? (Yes I know some of those are kids who can't vote, but you get my point.)
My point is that these ads are so ridiculous! Why are candidates wastefully spending money on actors to portray stereotypes? Why are you spending money putting up scary pictures of your opponent? Why are you getting so nasty? Tell me what you want to do, tell me how you're going to do it, shut the heck up about your opponent, stop wastefully spending money on stupid and offensive ads, show that you're actually in touch and listening to what the people want!
My final comment is about voting in general. I really encourage you to thoroughly research your candidates. I spent about a year doing this for my job (checking votes they made, researching statements they made, contributions they received) and I can honestly say I'm really concerned about the majority of people we elect to make decisions on our behalf. Nothing will ever change if we sit silently and just vote down a specific party line. We are the ones who have to hold these people accountable.
